We carry both models, and regularly welcome drivers who aren’t sure which compact option makes the most sense for their lifestyle and budget.

We carry a wide range of models, which includes both of these popular models. While they may have many similarities at first glance, there are some differences that set them apart, making each one right for specific driving needs. Today, we’re going to get to know these two models, ensuring that you get behind the wheel of the best one for your needs. Still unsure which one is the ideal match? Come in today, and our dedicated team will help you discover the perfect model.

Engine and Transmission Options

First, let’s look at the engines of these models. Each one is going to have a standard 1.5 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, the transmission options differ slightly between the two. The only transmission option for the Chevy Equinox is an eight-speed automatic transmission. While this transmission is standard for the off-road AT4 and the luxury Denali trim of the Terrain, it is actually not the standard transmission for the starting Elevation trim of the Terrain.

The Elevation Terrain trim will have a continuous variable transmission. Continuous variable transmissions are known to be slightly more efficient than an eight-speed automatic. They’re also going to deliver smoother acceleration. And because it has no fixed gears, the CVT allows for slightly more precise adjustments.

We cannot discuss the engines of these models without discussing a major difference between the Chevy Equinox and the GMC Terrain. Only the Chevy Equinox is currently available as an electric variant. So if you know you want an electric vehicle because you simply dream of leaving the gas pump behind, the Equinox is your only choice. However, the 1.5L I-4 does have excellent fuel economy, giving you 26 MPG in the city and 29 MPG, so if you’re most comfortable with a gas engine, this is the best option.

A Closer Look at Notable Trims From Each Model

The trim variety is where you notice a major difference between these models. The Equinox has models that are best suited for more budget-conscious Danville drivers and sporty individuals. Most notably, the Equinox has the ACTIV trim. With its all-terrain tires and youthful white roof option, the active trim delivers road trip readiness that appeals to adventurous folks.

The Equinox’s Performance-Focused RS Trim

The Chevy Equinox is also unique in that it is the only one of these two models with a performance-oriented model, known as the RS trim, which has cool and black mirror caps, moldings, and badging, as well as available 20-inch machined face wheels. Inside is a sporty flat-bottom steering wheel that will make you feel like you’re on the racetrack. The GMC Terrain does not have a performance forward model.

The Terrain’s AT4 and Denali

Where the GMC Terrain does stand out is its aggressive off-road model, the AT4, and its upscale model, the Denali.  The AT4 boasts an off-road-tuned suspension, a lifted ride height, and a Terrain drive mode made for rugged environments. It also has a steel underbody shield to protect your vehicle against damage and front recovery hooks for sticky situations. While the Equinox ACTIV trim is great for some light off-roading, the AT4 is a genuine off-road SUV.

As for the Denali trim, it brings luxury features simply not found or not as easily available in the Chevy Equinox.  For example, it has standard heated and ventilated front and rear outboard seats. You find features such as these available on upper trims of the Equinox but not standard on any. The Denali also has leather-appointed seats, whereas the most premium upholstery you’ll find in the Equinox is synthetic leather-like material.

Standard and Available Safety Features

As for safety features, there is quite a bit of overlap between these two vehicles. However, again, certain safety features come standard on select Terrain models that are only available as add-ons across the Equinox lineup. Standard on both models, regardless of the trim, you will get a high-definition rearview camera to help you see behind your vehicle, as well as rear cross traffic braking to help you avoid accidents when moving in reverse.

A following distance indicator and enhanced automatic emergency braking income standard as well. These help you avoid front-facing collisions and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. You will also get a side bicyclist alert on both models.

The GMC Terrain Denali trim has standard traffic sign recognition, which will detect posted signs and project their associated icon onto your digital cluster. The Denali also has standard rear pedestrian alert, which can sense people walking behind your vehicle and alert you. Also standard on the Terrain Denali is HD surround vision, which ensures you always see what’s happening around your vehicle. These three advanced safety features are only available on select Equinox trims and are not standard on any.

Touchscreen Size Options

Another significant difference between the two models is the size of the touchscreen. The GMC Terrain features a massive tablet-style 15-inch touchscreen. The Equinox, on the other hand, has an 11.3-inch diagonal touchscreen. If you simply can’t resist the biggest possible touchscreen, we get it, and the GMC Terrain is a better fit for your tech needs.

Which Model Best Meets Your Needs?

By now, you can probably see that while both the GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox come from General Motors, they also appeal to vastly different drivers. The Chevy Equinox is best for more budget-conscious, active drivers looking for a sporty and youthful feeling SUV for life around Danville. It’s ACTIV trim combines all-terrain tires and AWD for adventure-ready ruggedness. It also offers the performance-oriented RS trim with its striking, track-ready details, like black moldings and a flap-bottom steering wheel.  Additionally, its overall price range is slightly lower than that of the GMC Terrain.

Those looking for a true off-road-ready model should consider the GMC Terrain, as its AT4 trim is specifically designed for challenging environments. With an off-road-tuned suspension, increased ride height, and steel underbody plates, it can meet the demands of an avid off-road enthusiast. The GMC Terrain is better suited for luxury lovers, too, thanks to its Denali trim. This trim comes with perks like leather-appointed seats, standard heated and ventilated front seats, and an HD Surround Vision camera.

Overall, many features are more widely available across the GMC Terrain than the Chevy Equinox. From select safety features that are only available as add-ons on the Equinox but standard on the Terrain Denali to premium perks that simply cannot be found on the Equinox, the GMC Terrain has characteristics that clearly make it appropriate for those willing to invest a bit more.
